What are the STO phases?

A key component of the STO programme is the phase structure. The STO phases are split into two categories: Unlock: University or Unlock: Apprenticeships, and are broken down into four modules. The modules cover the entire 18 months of the programme, though you can access them whenever you want.

Explore: April – August (Y12)

Apply: September – December (Y13)

Prepare: January – June (Y13)

Succeed: July – August (Y13)

The phases contain resources to support you explore options, apply to university or apprenticeships, prepare for university or an apprenticeship, and succeed in your chosen pathway.

You can choose to either complete the phases in the university route or apprenticeship route, or both. The phase modules contain lots of content from both the Sutton Trust, our university partners and externally sourced content.
